‘Women will eat first, men later.’ Layth said decisively. It was breakfast time. There were food stalls nearby but they had not opened for service yet. Layth had brought some food with him, but there was only enough for half the group.

Blissfully sitting on top of my sleeping bag next to my neighbour, Noor, I drank a cup of hot tea and ate sweetened bread, consciously aware of the next trip to the toilets.

‘Right now.’ I smirked at Noor raising one eyebrow. ‘I’m glad that I’m a woman.’

Noor laughed.

Then abruptly stopped. ‘Right now?’ she narrowed her eyes. ‘Not all the time?’

I paused for a moment, remembering my earlier years. ‘Well… I don’t know.’

‘You don’t know what?’

‘Well… When I was younger I always wished that I was a boy. Boys seemed to have an easier life than girls.’

‘What do you mean?’

‘As a girl I just had less freedom and fun. My brothers could wear jeans, I couldn’t. They could swear, I couldn’t. I had to be at home and learn how to cook and clean whilst they were out playing football or at the youth club. They were encouraged to study and so was I, but I had to be a domestic goddess too. You know, I’ve lived my life under the shadows of my brothers. I hated being a girl when I was younger. Absolutely hated it.’
